Plot Summary:Wanted: News of Frank Otis, Age 27. Identification: long scar on chest. Left Mayville 12 years ago. His father will forgive and place on road to fortune. Address John Otis, 124 Grove St., Mayville. Frank took into his confidence two strangers. At the mention and sight of the scar upon Frank's chest (his one positive means of identification) Con immediately communicated to his pal the astonishing information that he bore a similar scar and they quickly outlined a plan to investigate the tale of a promised fortune by impersonating Frank. That night Frank accepted their invitation to go for a good time and in the darkness, they felled Frank, leaving him for dead. Trixie, a little \"'wharf-rat,\" lived with a washerwoman amid squalor and evil influences. In passing a cave she was attracted by meanings. She rescued Frank and assisted him to her home. Con and his pal arrived in Mayville and deceive John Otis, who tells them of the treasure of a befriended hermit. Frank convalescing, wins Trixie, and takes her to Mayville. Frank finds his father's cottage deserted. A duplicate of the hermit's crude map was brought to light, and they were able to follow Otis. John and his two companions' introduction to the interior was beset with adventure and weird experiences. They had been warned of the much feared \"Witch of the Mountains\" that they were told bode evil for anyone who transgressed within her domain. With the aid of the chart they soon realized that they were well on the trail and at this juncture John was set upon, the map stolen and his body thrown into the dense shrubbery for dead. The much abhorred \"Witch of the Mountains\" proved to be flesh and blood and when cautiously making her way through the undergrowth she came upon the prostrate form of John Otis. She dragged him to her cave. Con and Jim Boon found the treasure in the Cliff Country, which was designated as the secret spot upon the rude map. After a day's labor they unearthed a chest of gold and silver coin. \"The Witch of the Mountains\" stood like a luminous white specter outlined at the entrance of the cave; the menacing figure was uncanny. The pair with terror dashed madly away to their death. Frank, Hiram and Trixie were met by a sickening and horrible sight. Crumpled up in hopeless forms lay the bodies of Con and Jim. Consternation as to the fate of John came upon them. They located the cave where the fortune lay in full view with no explanation why it had been abandoned. Trixie discovered the \"Witch's\" hut in the gully, informed Frank and Hiram and there they found John, under the care of a sad faced but demented woman. Association with human beings after an isolation of years slowly brought light into the heretofore blank mind of the old woman and with a joyous, hysterical cry of recognition, she threw herself into the arms of John Otis, her long-lost husband. The reunion completes her story of years of suffering and darkness is related and all are reunited.
