Manakamana is a documentary recording the transient conveyance of Nepali pilgrims in a cable car on the way to their sacred temple. Watchers can get a taste of the local way of life and thought through how the passengers talk and interact with each other. From the perspective of methodology, this film is a postmodern experiment of sensory ethnography. It challenges the vision-oriented tradition of anthropological documentaries and blurs the boundary between subjects (the viewers) and objects (the locals). By putting emphasis on vision and hearing, the question we can take away from this film is: how much can we perceive ourselves and the world through our senses?
