Plot Summary:Relations between Japan and Russia deteriorated after the sino-japanese war over interests in the far east. War on Russia to Japan does alliance with Britain. After being stationed in England, saneyuki became an instructor at the naval war college and worked hard to train the next generation of commanders; on the other hand, shiki succeeded in innovating haiku and died after a fierce battle with illness. While the Japanese government tried to repair relations with Russia through diplomatic negotiations, it made preparations for war steadily, and saneyuki was appointed to the staff of the combined fleet. Japan finally decided to cut off relations with Russia and declared war. The combined fleet attacked lushun, the base of the Russian far east fleet, but failed in two blocking operations, and masayuki lost his close friend takeo hirose.
