无依之地

This film describes a woman whose husband died and had no children is homeless and lives in her small van and lives in a nomadic lifestyle. She doesn’t have a full-time job because of the economic recession, so she has to do many part-time jobs to earn a living. She lives alone for most of the time; there are some days when people from around the country gather together and throw a party and exchange their items and stories by the fire, she is also there. Most of the stories shared are sad, some of which are about somebody suffering cancer and having a few days left, some of which are about regret spending little time with their family or themselves. They devoted most of their time to work and worked like a hamster on a wheel and got little payment in return, and some people ended up with nothing but cancer. I think these sad stories seem to remind this woman that life is short, and we should live in the moment. However, this woman doesn’t listen to others. She would rather stay in her small van in the rigid winter than move to south to a warmer place where there would be more jobs available. In addition, she refused the favors offered by her sister who asked her to stay with her in her own house and by a man she’d met in a nomadic party who invited her to live with his own families who are nice and kind. I was confused when she insisted on living in her place which is ratty and cramped until she says in the movie that her husband loved this place and what’s remembered lives. I realized that she holds onto the memories with her husband here and if she was gone, everything might be like never happened, and she doesn’t want that, and she doesn’t want to let the past go and move forward. Honestly speaking, I would not choose the same way she does, because life is short, and it’s over in the blink of an eye. We should live in the moment, and look forward. We don’t want to regret not having done what we want when we get old, when it might be too late to go after anything we really desire for. If I were her, I probably would not choose to live with her sister, but I would like to stay with Dave who likes her and is easy to get along with. Anyways, everybody has a choice in how his or her life is lived.
