主角是大纽约城中的小人物，老想钓马子却没什么魅力，不是型男不说，也非孔武有力之辈。还不得不扮出一副知识分子模样，买咸湿杂志时此地无银地说明自己“Doing a sociological study on perversion. I'm up to Advanced Child Molesting. ”，结果性压抑到这样——“I once stole a pornographic book that was printed in braille. I used to rub the dirty parts. ”。好不容易靠小资地谈论东方哲学等扮深奥的招数钓上个“志存高远”，喜欢做瑜珈、搞反政府运动、解救非洲难民、研究麻风病、支持女权运动的大学生，结果没多久人家嫌弃他“emotionally, sexually, and intellectually immature”。为此他声称自己也是个左派革命家，并大声疾呼“I like leprosy! If that's what you're asking me... I'm perfectly willing to... I like leprosy, I like cholera! I like all the major skin diseases! ”，为表诚意，干脆杀到南美洲的San Marcos国，观察当地的极权统治者与民兵之间的运动，弄出一大堆无厘头笑料，无端端还成了当地总统……
