变化
沃特将化学视为一门研究变化的学科 (“the study of change”)，而本剧一开播，搭配类元素表的 teaser，变化很快来临—— 沃特生理罹癌，心理觉醒，以做坏 (break bad) 的形式，而且越来越不可逆。
“Electrons. They change their energy levels. Molecules. Molecules change their bonds. Elements. They combine and change into compounds. Well that’s…that’s all of life.…it’s the constant. It’s the cycle. It’s solution, dissolution just over and over and over. It is growth then decay then transformation. It is fascinating, really.” 「电子，它们改变自身的能级，分子呢，分子改变自身的化学键。这些元素进行组合从而形成化合物。这就是生命⋯⋯恆久不变，循环不已，从相溶到溶解，从生长、衰败，到转变，週而復始，多么迷人。」
“The term ‘chiral’ derives from the Greek word ‘hand’. The concept here being that, just as your left hand, and your right hand are mirror images of one another, right? Identical, and yet opposite. (….) So, chiral, chirality, mirrored images, right? Active, inactive. Good, bad.” 「手性这个术语源于希腊语的『手』，它在化学中的概念是相同而又对立，好比你的左手和你的右手互为镜像。(中略)。对掌、手性、镜像，一个有活性，一个没有活性。一好，一坏。」
沃特一面是安分守己的平凡人，另一面是杀了人的冰毒「艺术家」(artist，注 2)，如同镜像对称。如果善与恶、好与坏可以同时存在，那麽互相对立的事物、矛盾的情感也可以共存，例如「让小八活」和「让小八死」，例如「爱」与「不爱」。大多时候，角色都在两个极端之间游移不定，既有黑有白，却非黑非白，亦即下一个主题。
