In the mid-1930s, Noel Coward wrote a cycle of nine one-act plays (not twelve, as Brownlow mistakenly asserts) under the collective title Tonightat 8:30. Coward later admitted,”I wrote the Tonightat 8:30 plays as vehicles for Gertrude Lawrence and myself.”They were presented in repertory on three sucessive nights in group of three. The third bill included Still Life, “the most mature play of the whole series,”according to Coward. “Later it was made into an excellent film and retitled Brief Encounter.I am fond of both the play and the film.”Still, he retained a slight bias in favor of the play:”It is well-written, economical, and well-constructed. The characters, I think are true; and I can say...that I am proud to have written it.”The cycle of plays premiered at London’s Phoenix Theater in May 1936, and the production moved successfully to Broadway, with Lawrence and Coward still playing the leads.
Coward offered to write a preliminary screen treatment of Still Lifefor Lean when they discussed using it to follow Blithe Spirit. He “then persuaded David Lean, Ronnie Neame, and Tony Havelock-Allan to put it into production”: “This they agreed to do.”So A.R. Fulton is mistaken when he baldly declares that Coward alone wrote the screen adaptation.
The Rank organization had purchased the screen rights to the entire cycle of nine plays but had not yet filmed any of them. When Cineguild sought to purchase the screen rights to Still Life, Rank, having lost interest in the project, insisted that Cineguild buy the rights to all nine plays. Later on, when Lean showed Rank a draft of the script for the film that he, Neame, and Have lock-Allan had prepared Rank’s interest was renewed, and he agreed to a distribution deal. A budget of £270,000 was agreed on-not a substantial one for a British film of the period.
Still Life, a short play that runs just under an hour, sketches out a tragic love story in five brief scenes. Dr:Alec Harvey and Laura Jesson meet by chance in a railway station and subsequently fall in love. But they mutually agree to part and return to their separate families for good.
In a 1947 essay on Brief Encounter, Lean writes that the plot remained essentially faithful to the stage play:”There was an unhappy ending to the main love story. The film was played in unglamorous setting; and the leading characters were approaching middle-age.’In sum:”A few years ago this would have been a recipe for box office disaster, but this wasn’t the case with Brief Encounter.
Brief Encountersucceeded because of the “new realism,”mentioned above, that flourished in postwar British cinema. During the war, audiences had gotten used to the documentary realism employed in making even fiction film about the war, and afterward they continued to demand this kind of naturalism. More and more, films were shot on location, actors abandoned theatrical for more natural mannerisms, and a newsreel-like style was employed to photograph the action. There was no doubt, according to Lean, that Brief Encounterwas in the vanguard of films representing the new postwar realism.
Ronald Neame writes that he, Lean, and Havelock-Allan “transformed Noel’s somewhat static one-act play into an effective shooting script.”Lean decided that the story should be told in a complex pattern of flashbacks, even though in the play the events unfold in chronological order. After all, the flashback structure had worked very well in In Which We Serve. “Because of David”s choice of telling the story through flashback, we decided to have a narration spoken by Laura.”adds Neame.
Accordingly, the events are seen through the eyes and mind of Laura, whose voice is the source of what we see and hear. Putting it another way, the voice-over narration comes out of the narrator”s conscious recall. In short, the camera shows us what happened while the narrator comments on the action. In this fashion, the film foregrounds Laura not only as the principal character but also as a presence-someone whose comments presented in voice-over color the viewer’s perception of events.
Having Laura narrate the whole story from her point of view was a felicitous decision. This is because “what Laura tells us about what is going on strong point of view with which to identify. Bruce Eder remarks, “Because Laura relives each incident that she recalls, she brings the viewer inside her psyche. Hence, she brings us closer to the central character than anyone might have expected”(emphasis added).
The screenplay introduces into the framing narrative the figure of Laura’s husband, Fred, who is only referred to inthe play’s dialogue. Laura sits near her husband in the library of their home as they listen to Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto no. 2 on the radio. As she recounts the story of her recent involvement with Alec in voice-over, she imagines that she is telling it all to Fred, but, in reality, she is talking to herself. For she would not want to hurt her husband by revealing her affair to him.
Since Still Lifeis a short play, the screenwriters could retain nearly all Coward’s original dialogue. One thing that particularly appealed to them about the play was the manner in which Coward could write dialogue that played against the action;that is, the characters say one thing but actually mean something quite different.
