Bernheim-Jeune, who was a major art dealer in the Impressionist movement, included this painting as genuine in their catalogue listing all of Renoir’s works. In the catalogue raisonné, it detailed that it was bought by Berheim-Jeune on the 10th Feb 1937, from Blanche Monet for 40,000 francs.

However, another international art authority Wildenstein Institute are compiling their own catalogue of Renoir’s works and they will not accept this painting as genuine. The big international auction houses need a stamp of approval from the Wildenstein Institute.

With all these strong evidences collected in this episode, Wildenstein still doesn’t accept this painting is by Renoir. Some think it’s because of the rivalry between the two art houses.
