The movie “Hester Street” has historically been a center for Ashkenazi Jewish immigrant culture which kosher and Jewish-owned stores can be found. The movie illustrates the life of a Jewish Community where the new immigrants revisits their identities as Jews to accustom the way of life here when they first arrived. The main character Jake is a Jewish immigrant living in Hester Street at the beginning of 20th century. After Jake coming from Russia, he has shaved off his beard, found a job in a clothing workshop and learned English. He likes to flirt around women and being Americanize. Then his wife, Gitl, and son come to America. Their arrival reminds Jake of everything he has discarded and causes a confrontation between Old and New World values. Gitl, faced with a changed husband and a foreign world, must decide what she is willing to give up in order to become an American.
