This is not a movie you would enjoy if you have a successful career and are happily married, in other words, living a pretty good life. You probably would pity the leading characters and can't wait to see their miserable lives hit another bump on the road.
I, somehow, resonate with these two.( obviously, for personal reasons, I will not disclose in what way) We all grew up thinking great things would happen to us. Even those who don't shine academically don't lose faith in their future, simply because we are young and being young and miserable isn't that hopeless, after all, we've got time.
But when the day you're supposed to be grown-up comes, life, like a river in a narrow stretch, runs faster and riskier. By the time you're middle-aged, all hopes seem to have disappeared. What, once in your youth, was perceived to be a minor misfortune is a total disaster. Romance for middle-aged aren't even supposed to be romantic. But they do desperately need hope as much as young people. And this is what the director of this film was offering them.
