I like every part of Roswell, the sci-fi, the romance and the family conflicts. Somehow it has become a part of my childhood memory, which I would stay up on a Tuesday night, just to catch up with the latest episode. As a primary school kid at that time, watching tv at late night isn't always acceptable, considering the fact that I had to wake up very early for school the next day.
I guess I was a little diverted on the first paragraph, but Shiri Appleby has always been Liz Parker, the girl who Max saved at the Crash Down. Seeing her as a mom in Life Unexpected is something I never expected. It's different from seeing her on "6 Degree". She was sexy in "6 Degrees", but in Life Unexpected, she's a mom. Perhaps the writers want to portray her "mommy" look and engrave it into the audience's mind, but seriously, get her off those cardigans. She's only 30+ in and out of the show.
I haven't been watching any family drama ever since Gilmore Girls ended. Life Unexpected has brought up this part of me. I mean look at Gossip Girl, at the end of the entire show, everyone has already slept with everyone else. It's like recycling partners, something I couldn't accept. At least kick out some characters and get some new ones for them to sleep with.
However, Life Unexpected gives us a fresh touch to the CW. It shows how Baze and Cate learn to be parents and how Lux struggles to fit in a family. Each and every character is growing each episodes. For a kid like Lux, who had spent her entire 16 years of life under foster care, to have her parents back is something she didn't expect; hence the rebellion. Cate, the perfect girl who got knocked up at the age of 16, has to deal with her fiancee, her daughter and the father of her daughter. As for Baze, he himself is not even a full grown man. When all of them are put together, the conflicts, the drama and the fragility of their emotions give us a complex, yet moving show.
There are little things in live that we ignore, may it be our kids, our parents or our friends. It may seem as if we are all traveling in parallel lines, but the truth is that, there will always be a point that we all meet.
If you're looking for a simple family drama with a twist in their stories, I recommend Life Unexpected. This may not be as profound as CSI or Lie to Me, but it is something fresh amidst the turbidity that the CW presents to us.
I just wish the CW will not ruin the show. I have enough of Gossip Girl, Smallville and Melrose Place.
