仲夏夜惊魂

It’s fascinating that the perpetual and peculiar daylight and white color highlight horrors in this movie. There are two points I would like to touch upon.

1.Ideology of the village

In this small remote Swedish village, the ideology is clear and well maintained. The highest purpose is reproduction, maintaining certain population with a good demography. Everything serves and anyone can be sacrificed for this holy goal. Some criticized that killing old people and innocent people outside village and is inhuman. However, isn’t it similar with utilitarianism? Imagine our earth will be destroyed for a reason, and sacrifice a few aliens can save our planet. I don’t think many people will refuse this solution. Take one step further, do we have the right to judge cultures of remote tribes (or say ‘uncivilized’ society)? Isn’t arrangant to ‘emancipate’ them?

2.Brilliant manifestation of extreme empathy

It’s commune life. Residents share everything physically and mentally. People are connected to each other emotionally. Your empahty will be trained since you are a child, so that you can feel what others feel. This is why Dani was attracted by this community and chose to stay. My favoriate scene is, Dani heard the ‘collective’ sex from her boyfriend and ‘others’, she run into a room crying. Many followed her and cried even louder than her! What the fuck! In this communiy, there is zero privacy, which is absolutely scary. This scene is a brililant manifestation of lack of individuality.
