I finally had the chance to watch this beautiful movie after hearing so much about it. It didn't disappoint my expectation, funny, touching and sweet bitter.
The opening scene got me right away. My heart was hanging in the air when little Fraser took a crawling journey around on roof of this gorgeous mansion and it got back to its old spot after his worried father Edward, played by Colin, grapped him on the steep roof with a rope tied to his waist. A really curious, exploring child, and a trouble maker needless to say, hehe. Fraser's adventurous characteristic, indulged and encouraged by the same adventurous, eccentric and even childish inventor father, had never changed when he reached ten. In that summer, the arrival of his uncle's 'exotic child bride' Heloise aroused his first consciousness to the other sex, a turning point into adolescent. Unfortunately, Edward fell for Heloise too and vied with his own son for her affection. Being shut down by Edward, Fraser went to his Grandpa's attic for answers that he wanted to know, where he learnt for the first time in his life things about grown-up. Funny bits, sad bits scattered along the progress of turning mature for both Fraser and Edward. The last scene is as telling as the first one, where Edward found Fraser home alone, enjoying Jazz, cigar and brandy, enjoying his growing up, and Edward left him alone without interruption.
As a Colin fan, I always say something about him. The review ends here if you don't care so brilliant an actor, but I'll go on drooling on him once again, LOL. Colin is as gorgeous as always in "My Life So Far", and as good performance as usual. You'll smile when he stuttered at Fraser's question of "temptation of flesh", laugh when he jumped over the lawn into the chilly lake water, amused by his eccentric inventions like the inflatable human-driven floater, and feel sorry for him when he turned in his infidelity by pompousness. I love the scene when Edward brooded in pajamas by the fire after he hurted his dear wife with his Heloise fascination. IMHO, Colin's profile is one of the finest in the world and it's extremely sexy silhouetted agaisnt the fire...
BTW, Edward's mother in law Gamma is played by Rosemary Harris - aunt of the newest spider man, does that ring a bell? A lovely elegant old lady who I like very much.
