A kid‘s film. Though it has many interesting magic elements, the storyline is overall quite predictable and plain. I could watch this movie with 2x the speed and still feel bored. There is simply not enough meat in the film to make it full-fleshed.
I made a few chuckles to break the hollowness but still the lines are not witty enough to be really funny. The jump-scares are too clumsy and too apparent. It is like handing you a fake spider with a shop tag on it. You know it is a fake scare before you see the spider itself.
There are still some good parts in the film for a magic fan: the vintage themed house, the griffin that poos rotten leaves, the Alice-in-Wonderland like tea-party entourage of knights and toys. In a word, the patches on the quilt are colorful but the stitching of it all failed the movie to be engaging.
