Sanctuary
Musician David Sandström crashed when his punk band Refused came to a brutal halt during a US-gig in 1998. Punk had delivered him into the world. Now he returned to his native Västerbotten in the north of Sweden to make music that could bring him home, to his own family. David’s grandmother put the books The Tar Still and Cloudberry Land by Sara Lidman in his hands. The photographs of Sune Jonsson entered his apartment in Umeå. Since then Sara Lidman is his constant companion. In the film Sanctuary (Tillflykt) her words and the photographs of Sune Jonsson are weaved together with David’s music and his own travelling inwards and homewards. Sanctuary tries to touch what Sara Lidman once expressed; “I want to depict everything, but the things I most dearly want to get down on paper are the most difficult; I will never be able to catch them: the Forests and the Music!
