I've been catching up on this season of Weeds over the last couple of days and I just have to say that whatever Nancy's got coming, she totally deserves it. She is so incredibly selfish. What began as a mother's quest to keep her home and in so doing keeping her family together she is now getting a pure high off dealing and she doesn't seem to care about how it affects the people closest to her. Sure, she's aware of them being there, but she just doesn't give a *beep* if her dealing is wrecking their lives.
She's become all talk and no action in regards to her family. If she would make an actual effort to change - think of Shane's faith in his mother at the beginning of the season - she might have been able to at least try to be a guiding light for her sons. But, of course, they're all growed up now, they need to take care of themselves, right? Only she accepts money from Shane and she drags Silas right back into a life as a drug dealer. Now he even has grand plans, help us all. And Andy - poor, darling Andy - wanting to make an honest life for himself. Nope, don't think so - Nancy's back!
What the judge said to her, that she needs to find her way back to the Nancy she was when she was married to Judah, this should have played a bigger part in this season, because I'm just not interested in watching her make the same mistakes over and over and dragging all the people around her down with her. I can't feel any sympathy for that type of character and I think it's detrimental to have her as a lead. I feel more for Andy, Silas, Shane and even Doug than I do for her. Why should I care what happens to her? Seriously?! Her family was better off with her in jail. They did better when she wasn't around, *beep* them up.
I so think they're going to kill her off at the end of the show, but then I feel sort of like why were we taken on this ride, then? If all her struggling is ultimately going to be for nothing?
I always saw her as driven by this need to protect her family. She's the lion mother, roaring over her cubs, right? Not anymore. And it ruins the character and - in a small measure, because it's so damn well-written in every other aspect - the show for me. And of course my disappointment stems from me loving her deeply. I want to see her bounce back and have some sort of normal life. Or at least safe life, where she's not constantly thinking that drugs are the only way to help her family. Honestly, I actually feel that it's ridiculous! It doesn't even add that small thrill that it used to, watching her go through the motions of the drug-dealing world, because I'm just thinking how incredibly stupid she is. Seriously risking everything just so she can get that buzz. She's not the lion mother anymore and her using poor Stevie as an excuse to go on this crusade is CRAZY!!! I have to get my baby back, I have to get my baby back. YOU CAN GET HIM BACK BY LIVING A LAW ABIDING LIFE!
You may now say that this would not make good TV, but I would rather watch her struggling to get back on her feet and everything just going pear-shaped all the time, completely out of her control, as in the first season, when she didn't really know what the hell she was doing, than this... whatever.
Bring that back. Bring that Nancy back and let her find her way back to who she really is, because this Nancy feels almost like a response to Judah's death and her survival instincts kicking in. Three years in prison COULD have, had Jenji decided to go down that route, made some sort of dent in Nancy. But no. We're stuck with her being more selfish than ever. It is so frustrating not to care if she dies. It's not even going to be a shock. It seems more like the logical outcome of events. Which is damn sad.
Also, I don't care if she's gonna have wild sex with her annoying boss - it's so obvious that she's going to follow the same pattern so that whole story line bores me to tears.
Also, her wanting her baby back means what for that poor kid? A life of crime? Why should I, as the viewer, want that for that innocent little boy?
OH, it's so FRUSTRATING!
