It is a typical American blockbuster in my opinion though it is directed by a British film direcotor Paul Greengrass.
The story of Captain Phillips' being kidnapped and waiting for rescue seems really long and it tortures him and the audiences. He runs away from the life boat helmed by Somali "fishermen" and is caught again.
The American navy seizes every opportunity to get him back safely and they finally make it by sending Skinny to prison and shotpot the rest of the three. When captain Phillips is kidnapped in the tiny little life boat, tears are in his eyes for several times as he thinks of his family, I guess. Toms Hanks does a great job of portraying this character.
All is well that ends well. When tears again fulfill captain Phillips' eyes it must be joy. He goes back home safely in 2009 and return to his position in 2010.
One thing that confuses me from the beginning to the end is that why there is no armed force or guy on these ships that go dangerous lines including Somali. The seamen have no gun at all, which is not reasonable in the U.S. where it is legal to keep guns.
Well done, Paul Greengrass. I will see more of your other representative works!
