I have already watch lots of drama from 2000ise and I believe it was a gold era of dorama, not in China, but in Asia in whole, like the involving atmosphere.

Nowadays writers and directors, when portraying 1920-s tends to entertain the viewer (with avanture, good-looking man and women in gorgeous costume rather than give a sound and realistic atmosphere).

My mistake was, that I read the book before starting to watch the series. I expected some more moody atmosphere, like in “Shanghai bund” or the kind. Ofc, the novel has some humorous points, but mostly dramatic and even melodramatic, where the male character has no controversies in his relations with the family. He is rather cold, and if he is expressing kind of passion and is shown less obvious. He is kind of a sever person from the start. Some novel author’s flashes from his childhood past in the military school gives us a more deep dramatic look (strangely they were omitted in the series) .

I can’t agree with the choice of the male lead actor, for me he seems a nit overplaying of passion and changes between passion and masking it by coldness.

All in all I liked Jing Tian, I believe her character, and he played 23 year old person in 30-ies but I even didn’t pay attention to it. The determined young woman was portrayed almost as I expected.

Though in the beginning her character is following a Mary-Sew line, not due to her talents, but rather due to confluence of circumstances.
