Rachel Lapp and John Book are two people that fall in love but are from separate worlds. Rachel has no understanding of the violent world that is part of John Book’s daily life as a policeman. Rachel is used to the quiet farming life of her Amish community. She would find it hard to live in John Book’s big city, just as Book would find it hard to live in Rachel’s world. Book would have to pretend that he loved the quiet life on the farm when we can see that he loves the rough and tumble life of being a homicide detective. As Rachel says he likes “whacking” people. He could not be happy on the farm as he would be pretending to be someone he is not. Similarly, Rachel would not be happy in the big city. We can see this in the way she acts at the railway station and in the back of the police car. She does not approve of the way that John Book behaves. If she moved to the city she would have to try to change into a modern city living person when inside she is an Amish women who cannot live in the big city. If Book stayed on the farm he would also be trying to be someone he is not. If Rachel moved to the city she would miss the Amish community and her life. They would both be pretending to be someone they are not and will be unhappy because they will not be able to find out who they really are.
