David Gale: We spend our whole life trying to stop death. Eating, inventing, loving, praying, fighting, killing. But what do we really know about death? Just that nobody comes back. Then there comes a point - a moment - in life when your mind outlives its desires, its obsessions, when your habits survive your dreams, and when your losses... Maybe death is a gift. You wonder. All I can tell you is that by this time tomorrow I'll be dead. I know when. I just cannot say why. You have 24 hours to find out.

So the lesson of Lacan is "Living by your wants will never make you happy". What it means to be fully human is to strive to live by ideas and ideals and not to measure your life by what you've attained in terms of your desires, but those small moments of integrity, compassion, rationality, even self sacrifice. Because in the end, the only way that we can measure the significance of our own lives is by valuing the lives of others.

影片用录像带📼的方式抽丝剥茧地揭露真相，我到最后才恍悟康斯坦斯是自杀，但是大卫戈尔的献祭已经由多个细节铺陈，他们都为一生所追求的理想奋斗与献身。配乐厚重，文字的剪辑跳跃显眼，后半段剧情让观众看得屏息凝神，我真切地希望记者可以如约赶到阻止死刑，但最后的反转证明了一切尽在掌握之中。
