I was re-watching thefirsthalfofMartinScorsese'sTaxiDriveryesterday. I believe that the last time I watched itwasthreeyears ago, at Charles de GaulleAirport, waiting to boardaplane home. It was asunnyafternoon in Paris and I was watchingitwith my best friendfrom college at a cafeafter we finishedoursandwiches. There was toomuch light, which might have ruined 50% ofthemovie,and we were watching it on my hand-me-downsmallIBMthat used to belong tomy dad and we kept worrying that thebatterywould give up. But westill enjoyed it. Granted, I had justturned21and have no idea whattrue melancholy really is. But I liked it.Now three yearslater, with a little bit morelifeexperience but having nothing oftremendoussignificance happening to me, I suddenly feel thatIgetTravis:hisloneliness, hisinsomnia, his feelings for Betsy, why heinitiallythought it would be okay to takehertoseeanadult movie on their first officialdate,what he talked about with theWizard,and what the Wizard said about a man, his job, his desires andhisvalues.

Then comes the scene of Travis eating breakfastwhilewatching newsabout SenatorPalantine on TV.Itwas shredded bits ofwhite breadin acereal bowl, peach brandy, milk, and sugar. The only thing that came to mind is: that's really weird, but damn if it doesn't look delicious.

If you think back at the previous scenes of Travis eating, you'd notice something: when he goes to the adult movie theatre, he buys Chuckles, asks for another kind of candy "juju" because "they last longer", buys a coke and two othercandy bars. When he has coffee with Betsy for the first time at the cafe, he orders apple pie with a slice of melted yellow cheese. hmmmm.

Travis loves the sweet things life. Doesn't he?

Don't think I ever thought of him that way before.

It always feels like hunger and indigestion at the sametime when youcan't finish a movie in one helping. Will try to finish it today.

But in a way I'm also glad. it gives metime to think about the strangebut oddlydelicious breakfast Travis had whilehewas in front of thattelevision.

Gotta try it sometimes.
